The project explores the question of whether or not the soul exists. The fish wander between the boundary of animate and inanimate, and the aquarium could be a life-sustaining device or a cabinet of death.

Descartes writes that it's impossible to know whether a spirit dwells in others. 'Alive' is an invisible, uncertain state - science can only uncover half of the picture of the soul or consciousness. These fish are empty vessels from which the life has left, and that's what we all end up as.

The project addresses the oddity and wonder of our existence. The state of being alive is exceptional, considering how much more inanimate matter there is in the universe than the animate.  Where does this miraculous state of life come from? And can it survive the death of the body?

死んだものを生きているように扱う行為は虚しく滑稽だが、死を受け入れることに苦しむ人類のさまざまな試みの中にも似た滑稽さがある。 この魚たちは意識の去っていった空の容器であり、私たち全員が行き着くところでもある。</sup>
