The project explores the question of whether or not the soul exists.
The fish wander between the boundary of animate and inanimate,
and the aquarium could be a life-sustaining device or a cabinet of death.

Descartes writes that it's impossible to know whether a spirit dwells in others. 'Alive' is an invisible, uncertain state. Science can only uncover half of the picture of the soul or consciousness. 

These fish are empty vessels abandoned by life, as we will be.

The project exoplores the oddity and wonder of our existence. To be alive is exceptional, given how much of the universe consists of inanimate matter. Where does this miraculous state of life arise? And can it persist beyond the body?

<sup>水槽という生命維持装置に入っているだけで私たちは魚が生きているのではないかと疑ってしまう。 デカルトが他者に精神が宿っていることを証明するのは不可能だと説いたように「生きている」とは目に見えない不確かな状態である。この魚たちの魂はどこから来てどこへ行ったのか？また同じように私たち自身の意識はどこへ行くのか?

死んだ魚を生きているように扱う行為は虚しく滑稽だが、
死を受け入れることに苦しむヒトのさまざまな試みの中にも似た滑稽さがある。
この魚たちは生命の去った空の容器であり、私たち全員が行き着くところでもある。</sup>
